Hemorrhoid Treatment

A hemorrhoid is a collection of dilated vessels and swollen surrounding tissues in the rectal and anal area.  Hemorrhoids can often cause bleeding, itchiness, pain and general discomfort in the surrounding area.  Some of the common causes of hemorrhoids include constipation, frequent diarrhea, pregnancy, childbirth, heavy lifting and sitting for prolonged periods.

Typical first line treatments include creams, suppositories, and warm baths.  While hemorrhoids may sometime be treated with these simple regimen in some people, they often get worse by increasing in size and number in others.  Fortunately, there are now simple ways to treat them more definitively.

One of the means of treatment includes placing a small rubber band around the tissue just above the hemorrhoids, where there are few pain-sensitive nerve endings.  The procedure is quick and is associated with very little side effects.  Depending on the size and number of the hemorrhoids, some people may require more than one session of treatment.  Please consult Dr. Wong to see if this is a good treatment option for you.
